Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a marvel of modern orthodontics. Instead of putting up with metal brackets and wires on your teeth with bi-weekly appointments for tightening, Invisalign uses a system of custom-made dental trays that put gentle pressure on your teeth to guide them into their correct positions.

The dentists at Bar and Smith Dental use Invisalign to treat a variety of dental imperfections including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps
  • Overbites and underbites
  • Open bite (your teeth don’t meet when your mouth is closed)

The trays are made of clear, smooth medical-grade, BPA-free plastic. Unless someone looks at your teeth closely, they’ll never know you’re having orthodontic treatment. You wear the trays all day and night, but you can take them out to eat and clean your teeth.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation and dental exam at Bar and Smith Dental. Bar and Smith Dental has invested in state-of-the-art CAD technology and iTero® equipment to create accurate images and multidimensional scans of your teeth.

They use this technology to plan and map the migration of your teeth to give you a perfect smile with customized Invisalign treatment. They send the plan to an Invisalign dental lab, where technicians manufacture your dental trays.

When your trays are ready, your dentist fits you with the first set. You wear them for two weeks and then come back to Bar and Smith Dental to get your second set of aligners. For the first 6-8 weeks of your treatment, you have biweekly appointments so your dentist can make sure your Invisalign treatment is progressing as expected.

However, once they’re satisfied with your progress, they give you several sets of aligners, and you may only need to have appointments every eight weeks. Everyone is different, and your dentist gives you a personalized treatment plan.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign treatment provides a wide range of benefits. First, the aligners are clear and smooth, which makes them nearly invisible to other people and more comfortable to you than traditional metal braces.

Second, you can take your aligners out for brief periods. For example, you take your aligners out to eat, so you don’t need to give up any of your favorite foods.

Invisalign can also improve your oral health. Since you can brush and floss your teeth normally, instead of having to work around brackets and wires, you reduce your risk of issues like cavities and gum disease.

Invisalign treatment is often faster than traditional orthodontic treatments, with some patients achieving their dream smiles within just nine months of starting treatment.
